Spotify & UMG embrace AI generated covers and new features
Spotify used May 2026 to showcase an aggressive push into artificial intelligence and new revenue streams. On May 21, the streaming giant announced a partnership with Universal Music Group that will allow premium subscribers to create AI‑generated covers and remixes of songs by Universal artists. Spotify emphasized that the tool will provide additional income for artists and songwriters and initially offers users limited free usage before requiring a paid add‑on.
At the same event, Spotify introduced several features meant to boost user engagement and ticket sales. “Reserved” allows premium subscribers to purchase up to two concert tickets before public sale, while “Personal Podcasts” generates custom podcasts from user prompts. Spotify also unveiled “Studio by Spotify Labs,” an AI‑powered desktop app that can act on behalf of users to create personalised content, and plans to expand its Audiobooks+ tiers. Co‑CEO Alex Norstrom described these offerings as grounded in “consent, credit and compensation” for artists. With growth targets of a mid‑teens compound revenue rate through 2030 and a goal of operating margins above 20%, Spotify’s May announcements signal a bold vision for AI‑driven creativity and fan experiences.
How will this transform and shape the music industry moving forward?
