Cannes Film Festival 2026: Fjord and New voices Win Big

At the 79th Cannes Film Festival (held May 13–24, 2026), Romanian director Cristian Mungiu made history when his drama Fjord won the Palme d’Or, making him only the tenth director to win the top prize twice. The film follows a mixed Romanian‑Norwegian couple who return to the wife’s village on the fjords, where they confront cultural clashes and lingering secrets. Deadline reports that the Grand Prize went to Minotaur, while the Best Director award was shared between Javier Calvo & Javier Ambrossi for La Bola Negra and Paweł Pawlikowski for Fatherland. The festival’s Jury Prize went to The Dreamed Adventure, and acting honors were split: Virginie Efira and Tao Okamo shared Best Actress for All Of A Sudden, while Emmanuel Macchia and Valentin Campagneshare shared Best Actor for Coward. The Caméra d'Or for best first feature went to Rwandan director Marie‑Clémentine Dusabejambo for Ben’Imaña. The 2026 edition highlighted a mix of established auteurs and emerging voices, reinforcing Cannes as a launchpad for world cinema and bringing attention to films that explore cross‑cultural identity, myth and courage.
